From now, Blind Shark has a new website ! I recently began to redevelop Blind Shark, adding new functions, rethinking things, ... I set up a wiki to expose my ideas, and receive comments. Description

Blind Shark is a multiplayer computer game, dedicated to animate parties. The purpose of the game is to find the answer related to a sound. The faster to react can answer, and take the points.

Due to the abstraction of the game, multiple games can be played :

Who sings this ? where the interpret of a song has to be found

What's this song ? where the name of a song has to be found

What's this ? where the origin of a sound has to be found (animal, cars, common items, ...)

Who tells this ? where a known personality has to be found

and much more ...

The Game

The gameplay is pretty simple, and uses only the keyboard and the mouse (to navigate during the configuration). Each player (from 1 to 4) is associated with a key, that she has to press when she thinks she has the answer.

Each game can be easily configured with different settings, reflecting the choices of the players. The settings include :

The time to answer

The points gained for a good answer

The points lost for a bad answer

The time the sound is played

...

List of sounds

Blind Shark doesn't provide any sounds. It's up to you to create lists to confront your friends. Think of themed lists, such as the "Top of 80's", "Feral Creatures", "Series Celebrities" and other. The Tracklist Manager provided make the creation of lists easier. Any thoughts on how imrpove it are welcomed !

Because anyone is not forced to know the exact spelling of each name, Blind Shark integrates a misspell detection system, which compares the number of differences between the exact answer, and the proposition. There's also the possibility to get multiple answers for one sound (i.e. : The Rolling Stones, Rolling Stones, The Stones).

To Come

Blind Shark is still in development, and new functionalities and improvements are still to be developed. The Tracklist Manager is the next part of the development.

This wiki will also be improved with pictures, more informative pages, and the french version will be updated (because I'm french, and the development is made by french people --> me).

If you want to join and help me building Blind Shark, feel free to post in the Discussions part !

Technical things

Blind Shark uses the following technologies / programs :

Developed in C# 2.0, using the SharpDevelop IDE

Graphics and Input are managed by the SdlDotNet library

Audio is managed by the FMod library

Compressing is managed by the LZMA library

Installer is created with DreamShield

What do I need to play ?

You need a computer running under Windows XP or Windows 2000. I haven't test Blind Shark under Vista myself, but it seems to have problems.
You also need to install the Framework .Net 2.0. This program is provided by Microsoft to enable the execution of the softwares build with the .NET Framework. The installer will take care of this step.

What kind of music file can I play ?

Current file formats have been tested successfully :

mp3

wav

ogg

Why did you name it "Blind Shark" ?

The name "Blind Shark" comes from two origins.
The word "Blind" stands for the purpose of the game. It's called a "Blind Test". So for the "Blind" ...
Then, I wanted to find an original name. "Blind Test XP" or "Blind Test 2007" didn't suit me. Cause I develop the software with the C# language (C sharp), I find this cool, and change it to "Shark". So for the "Shark" ...
And later, I discovered that "Blind Shark" was a true specie of shark. Then I found my logo !
Description

Blind Shark uses the following technologies :

Developed in C# 2.0, using the SharpDevelop IDE

Graphics and Input are managed by the SdlDotNet library

Audio is managed by the FMod library

Compressing is managed by the LZMA library

The time the sound is played

...

How can I get my tracklists on another computer ?

This tutorial will show you how you can get your own tracklists, done on your computer, running on another computer without having to recreate them. This version of the tutorial is dedicated to the 0.5.0 "Sunburns version" of Blind Shark.

1 - Creating the Tracklist

The first step is, obviously, to create the Tracklist. Do as usual, and save your tracklist. Quit the Tracklist window, and go to the Tracklist List window.

2 - Exporting the Tracklist

Select your Tracklist in the list, and then press the Export button. The software will ask you where to create a file with the .bsp extension (for Blind Shark Package). You can put it anywhere you like, but make sure you get enough available disk space. The required disk space is approximatively the same that the space your music files take.

You will now have to wait for the program to create the package. For the moment, this operation is time consuming, but it will soon be improved. When the creation is over, you get a .bsp file you can take to your friends to play !

3 - Importing the Tracklist

The final step is to import the tracklist to another computer with Blind Shark installed. Launch the Tracklist Manager, and go to the Tracklist List window. Press the Import button. A new window will ask you to choose a directory where the software will copy the music files. You can choose whatever directory you want, but I advise you to choose a fast drive (i.e. preferably not an external one).

Again, the Import operation is quite time consuming, but it will be improved in the next weeks. When you're done, the Tracklist appears in the list. You can play it, it will perfectly work !

Misc

Do not change the music files or the directory where they've been copied before the Tracklist has been played !

This function can also be used to store the played Tracklists, and avoid a too huge list of Tracklists.

The format used for the Blind Shark packages has been created for Blind Shark. Do not try to use another software to open them, you will not succeed !

Quit the _Tracklist _window, and go to the Tracklist List window.

How to create a Player profile for Blind Shark ?

This tutorial will show you how you can create a player profile for Blind Shark. This version of the tutorial is dedicated to the 0.5.0 "Sunburns version" of Blind Shark.

1 - The Avatar

To represent the player, you will need an avatar. Some avatars are available with Blind Shark, but they're only colored Question Marks.

You can use whatever you want for an avatar, as long as it is a picture (player's photo, drawing, symbol, ...). You will undoubtedly need to edit the image within an editor, like Paint.Net.

The picture file has to be of equal width and height, like a square. The size itself is irrelevant as it will be stretched before drawing in the game. I advise you to make pictures between 150x150 and 200x200 pixels.

The formats accepted are .bmp, .jpg, .png and .gif. The transparency works well with the gif format. As the background where avatars will be displayed is black, you can also use black background to imitate transparency.

When your avatar(s) is completed, put it (them) in the avatars directory of the Blind Shark directory.

2 - The Profile

Now, you have to run Blind Shark, and follow the menu Players Management and then Create Player.

There, you can see the list of the available avatars. Choose the one you want.

You now have to enter the Player name, which will be displayed during the game.

Done ? Click Ok, and that's done ! You've just created a new player's profile !

Description

...

A Venir
